Delighted to announce that I won an editorial gold award at the Association of Illustrators 'Images 35' awards last thursday. I won the prize for my 'Sawney Skull' illustration for BBC History Magazine. The image is part of the Images 35 exhibition starting now at the Bankside Gallery in London and touring the country.

p.s. the head of design at the Times who presented the award is on a stage. I'm small but not that small!

Some roughs just seem to work sometimes. Not in the fact that they are approved and are used - just in that some have a nice feel to them. I liked the rough for this job but I was very pleased with the final too.
This one was to show 'Benefit of Clergy' where people were cleared of the death sentence by claiming they were members of the church. They were given more lenient sentences but were branded by the local hangman with a letter so they could only claim this 'benefit' once.

Soldiers in the WW2 trenches sometimes wished for a 'blighty wound'. A wound that was serious enough to be sent home to 'blighty'

Version 1 was the original which was deemed to be too offensive to older readers. Version 2 was redone to be muddy not bloody!

In Lancashire the menfolk settled disputes by the means of clog fights (or 'purring' as it was known). This involved lots of drinking and the fighting and the gambling that went with it was highly illegal. By all accounts the fights were done in the nude apart from the said clogs. One version involved the two fighters sitting on the rim of a large barrel and hacking each others shins until one submitted. The winner was the best of 3! Sometimes I love my job!

Panto poster for the Tron Theatre Glasgow. They wanted something a little bit 'anarchic' showing the characters in the Panto. The anarchy and the number of characters on the poster were reduced as were the boobies on 'Bunty' but it still ended up a fun pic!

Pitches - bah! Just worked on a project to develop some animated characters for NHS Choices with an old colleague Trevor Pake. Didn't make it to the next stage of the pitch though which is disappointing as I think we produced a great presentation and a Trevor created a great script - even though I do say it myself. Would have been great to bring this fella to life! Never mind - bring on the next project!

The answer it turns out was a King of Sussex that the Romans had dealings with. I thought it'd be fun to have him as the first British holder of an identity card - getting some topicality in there too!

Family Advertising for Progressive Partnership asked me to produce a townscape with the detail of the 'Where's Wally' childrens books. The 50 or so scenarios originally briefed to be in the picture multiplied into more like 75 but they all fitted in somehow to the overall townscape.

Did the Chinese get to the new world before Columbus? A Q in the Q&A column for BBC History Magazine that I'm illustrating from January. It seems that maps from the time (which I referenced for the pic) show that the Chinese visited many places in the world before Columbus' 'discoveries'. Here's one of the latest illos for Big Picture 7 for Wellcome Trust. Following hot on the heals of Big Picture 6 (see below) this time the subject is Drug Development. An idea was needed to show the different ways a drug will protect a cell. Some repel attackers, some fight them inside the cell and some protect the core of DNA. Seemed to lend itself to a castle idea! It'll be out in December and the pdf will be downloadable on their website (in my links list) along with the other 6!

Come to Cumbernauld

I've just completed a map commissioned by the Scottish Wildlife Trust for the friends of Cumbernauld Glen. Haven't done a map for a while and boy was this one complicated! Hopefully it'll attract people to a more picturesque area of Cumbernauld (made semi famous in Gregory's Girl). There'll be slate waymarkers set into the paths around the area too. Never had images set in stone before!

On March 23rd we welcomed a very small Ruby May McBeth into the world! After 6 weeks in the neonatal ward she's home with us at last! Now I have to try and do some work in between the feeds, the visits, the screaming, the sleepless nights, the nappy changes......
